NEW JERSEY GROWN COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM

The Jersey Fresh brand brings to mind images of New Jersey’s bounty of locally grown fruits and vegetables. With horticulture the state’s largest agricultural sector, Jersey Grown, one of the state’s newest brands, celebrates the highest quality locally grown plants, trees and shrubs.

Greenhouse, nursery, Christmas trees and sod generated $368.5 million in revenue in 2004, which accounted for 43 percent of the total of New Jersey agriculture revenue.

Begun two years ago, the Jersey Grown brand certifies trees, shrubs, plants and flowers are grown in New Jersey, accustomed to the state’s growing conditions, are checked for quality and are disease and pest-free.

To introduce municipalities to Jersey Grown materials, the Department is sponsoring the New Jersey Grown Community Award program. Jersey Grown plants are a wonderful way to beautify a town and the award program will recognize those towns that use Jersey Grown products creatively.

The New Jersey Grown Community Award program is open to all municipalities in the Garden State and will recognize exemplary plant design and maintenance projects while highlighting Jersey Grown plant material. Representatives of the municipality must be involved with the installation and maintenance of the project and meet all other criteria and conditions of the program.

For details of the program, go to the New Jersey Grown Community Award Program Brochure.
